île de païn Food PhotographyProducts
CREATE DESIGN ™ the Garden Route based design and photography studio was approached by Liezie Mulder and Markus Färbinger with an exciting idea for a recipe book. We came away from our initial meeting excited at the prospect of such a challenge, to photograph and design the whole book. We had no idea how creative the project would be and how much fun we would all have in putting our ideas together in a tangible limited edition box set of recipe cards.
Colin & Raquel Stephenson started immediately. After Liezie and Markus had collected their content and had tackled the first stage of editing we began conceptualizing designs and ideas. First, we started with days of photography gathering the perfect food photography for each recipe. We would arrive at île de païn early in the morning and already Liezie had prepared a feast. After photographing all the food, we ate! It was a fabulous experience. We combined studio lighting with natural light to capture the food photography. The portable photo studio allowed us to work in the restaurant in Knysna, which made all the food photography very immediate and spontaneous.
The proximity to the subject and working very closely Liezie and Markus gave us a wonderful insight into their passion for food, and the way in which they approach each aspect of their art with the utmost care. This informed our approach to the project, we wanted to capture their passion and their vision as clearly and as accurately as possible. CREATE DESIGN ™ photographed all the food and product photography as well as inset editorial portraits and interior photographs needed to compile the book. And so after a full year of production from start to finish, the box set hit the shelves in the first week of December. By January the limited edition was sold out.
It was a remarkable experience that we will never forget. It has further forged our love for design and appreciation for passionate people. We cannot wait till the next book! île de païn Photography
